Discover Vienna: CultTech

Explore Vienna And Its Booming Creative And CultTech Scene!

The Vienna Business Agency offers a two-week program taking place from 25 September to 9 October 2019. It intends to provide international creative companies and startups an insight into the Viennese creative and cultural industries scene and help them explore business opportunities at the intersection of culture and technology in Vienna. In addition, participants will have the chance to take part in top creative and cultural events in Vienna.

Vienna boasts world-class cultural events and museums and is a thriving hub for startups and creative companies as well as one of the global leading smart cities. At the intersection of these worlds, opportunities arise to create innovative digital solutions for the cultural sector. CultTech Lab Vienna marks the start of a planned CultTech Hub Vienna with the goal of making Vienna the digital cultural capital of Europe. Out of the participants of Discover Vienna, a jury will select companies to take part in the first CultTech Lab Vienna as part of the program.

1 viennacontemporary: 26 – 29 September

The international art fair viennacontemporary gathers more than 100 galleries and institutions from 23 countries under the roof of iconic Marx Halle. The only art fair to unite the East and the West in carefully curated exhibitions, viennacontemporary stands out in the crowded art calendar as a place for exciting discoveries. A wide array of special presentations, as well as sophisticated accompanying events complete the rich offer and make art accessible to every visitor.

The results of the first CultTech Lab Vienna will be presented as part of viennacontemporary on 26 September.

2 Vienna Design Week: 27 September  – 6 October

Vienna Design Week is Austria’s largest design festival, with a variety of locations and events in Vienna. The festival curated by Lilli Hollein entered its 13th round in 2019. Opening up creative processes and giving scope for experimentation on site are core elements of the festival concept. During Vienna Design Week, the city becomes a platform and showcase of design. Design is defined as an essential part of the cultural production. The festival shows that design shapes our material culture, our every-day life and our world as consumers.

For the first time, Vienna Design Week will set a focus on game design in 2019. It will showcase the local game scene to foster networks internationally as well as with other design sectors.

3 Waves Vienna Festival and Music Conference: 26 – 28 September

Waves Vienna is the city’s first club- and showcase festival. Merging Vienna’s most significant clubs, unique off-locations, and the public space, numerous international alternative, electronic, rock, and club acts will be performing around Vienna’s 9th district. This year, Waves Vienna will welcome two countries as special guests: Portugal and Slovakia. True to the motto “East Meets West”, there will be a focus on acts from these countries in the live program. The Waves Vienna Music Conference will furthermore devote a part of its program to the respective music markets and scenes of these two countries.

4 Vienna Art Book Fair 4 – 6 October

For three days, the Vienna Art Book Fair #1 will offer an accompanying program that includes exhibitions, guided tours through the fair, book presentations, artists’ talks, readings, panels, workshop visits and performances.

5 Parallel Vienna 24 – 26 September

Parallel Vienna uses temporarily vacant buildings as a presentation platform for contemporary art. This year the event takes place in a former office building. Parallel Vienna presents young and emerging as well as established artistic practices and brings together art initiatives of every kind – art associations, galleries, project spaces, off spaces and artist spaces – , both Austrian and international, all under one roof. It thus combines local artistic creation with international trends and contributes to building networks and fosters exchanges between artists, curators, collectors and exhibition visitors.
